The EPZs of northern & southern region set up by the prudent decision of the Honurable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has chnaged the pace of living of this regions. Mongla EPZ (MEPZ) of southern region has accelerated the economic growth, increased working activities in this lagging area. Within short time Mongla EPZ would be the main economic hub of the southern region. The Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) Major General Mohd Habibur Rahman Khan, ndc, psc made this comments during speaking as Chief Guest in the investment seminar organized by Mongla EPZ on 22/05/2017. The seminar was organized in a local hotel of Khulna to promote Mongla, Ishwardi and Uttara EPZs located in Northern & Southern part of the country.
The Executive Chairman of BEPZA said, the investors of MEPZ will be privileged to manage their business through the Padma Bridge & Asian Highway. Fully function of Pyra Port, establishment of rail links to Mongla, opearton of proposed Air Port would change the economic scenario of this region, he added. Mongla Economic Zone will also add new dimension in business of this area. Answering to the question regarding scarcity of land in the EPZs BEPZA Chief said, BEPZA can not fulfill the demand of the big investors since there is no land to allot in Dhaka & Chittagong EPZ. He hoped that the functioning of BEPZA Economic Zone at Mirsarai, Chittagong will solve the problem.
General Habib said, workers-owners harmony is the key strength of EPZ. The workers of EPZs enjoy freedom to elect their representatives through forming Workers Welfare Association (WWA) who actively perform like trade union in order to fulfill the workers’ demand and solve their problem as CBA, he added.
The Exective Chairman said, BEPZA has been contributing 20% to the total national export & FDI from 8 EPZs consisting only 2302 acres of land. Poiniting out success of BEPZA he said, BEPZA achieved 179.19% growth in investment, 216.57% in export, 128.44% in employment generation and 40.50% in operation of new industries in the last 8 years. He informed, BEPZA gained investment US$ 2667.60 million, exported US$ 38,330.99 million, generated employment 2,55,118 nos. and 170 new industries started operation during 2009-16 period. On other hand, investment made US$ 955.49 million, export earned US$ 12,108.20 million, created employment opportunities for 1,16,789 persons and 121 new industries started operation in the previous 8 years i.e. 2001-08, he added. He urged the the entrepreneurs to invest in Mongla, Uttara & Ishwardi EPZ.
Expressing his satisfaction in the seminar regarding overall activities of Mongla EPZ Director of VIP Industries limited, an enterprise of MEPZ, said that he will expand his factory very soon. Mohammed Ali Kapadia, CEO of Tara Exim Corporation expressed his comfort in investing MEPZ. He hoped that the scenario of this region will be completely changed within two years.
Mentionable, investment stood US$ 4282.22 million from 462 operational & 129 under implementation enterprises of 8 EPZs till April 2017, exported goods worth US$ 58,168.61 million and generated employment for 4,69,929 Bangladeshi people.
