Bangladesh EPZ Authority is going to establish Economic Zone at Mirsarai under Chittagong district. In presence of Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Co-coordinator (SDG Affairs) of Prime Minister’s Office, Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today (18/05/2017) at Prime Minister’s Office. The Executive Chairman of BEPZA Major General Mohd Habibur Rahman Khan, ndc, psc and the Executive Chairman of BEZA Mr. Paban Chowdhury signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. Formally, the journey of ‘BEPZA Economic Zone’ started through this signing.

In the signing ceremony, Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Co-coordinator (SDG Affairs) said, ‘BEPZA is marching ahead successfully and set a unique example in attracting investment in the country for others to emulate. Now BEPZA is a brand to foreign investors. This brand image of BEPZA will play an important role for flourishing investment in Economic Zone. He also added, the success of BEPZA inspired government to establish Economic Zone. The government wants to utilize the expertise of BEPZA to bring success for the Economic Zone since BEPZA has been achieved a good reputation in setting up industrial zone, development and operation. He hoped that BEPZA Economic Zone would be ready for investment within very short time and BEPZA will be able to prove its efficiency and reputation in home and abroad.


BEPZA Executive Chairman Major General Mohd Habibur Rahman Khan, ndc, psc said, a decision was taken at the 33rd meeting of BEPZA Board of Governors on February 04, 2015 quoting ‘BEPZA and BEZA will jointly study and proceed in accordance with the law whether BEPZA should given responsibility to develop Two Economic Zones or not’. He informed that in this perspective, BEPZA & BEZA fixed the land area and finalize the financial proposal after jointly examining the proposed project. As per the final proposal, BEZA allocated 1150 acres of land to BEPZA for setting up economic zone. The two organizations formally signed MoU today which was already been approved by the Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said, there would be about 850 plots in the proposed BEPZA Economic Zone where approximately US$ 4500 million would be invested likely in 350 industrial units and will create employment opportunity roughly for 5 lacs peoples.  

General Habib uttered, Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed to build investment friendly Bangladesh and BEPZA has been contributing to execute it. Eight EPZs under BEPZA located at the different parts of the country already been famed as Bonanza for the Investment. Economic Zone is the new concept of investment in the country. BEPZA is going to be the proud partner of this Economic Zone. He also said, BEPZA is moving forward to build golden Bangladesh under the guidance of the Honourable Prime Minister and working to implement Vision- 2021 & 2041. During 2009-16 period, BEPZA has attained US$ 2667.60 million in investment which shows growth of 179.19%, export earned US$ 38330.99 with growth 216.57% & operating industries were 170 with growth 40.50% and generated employment 2,55,118 Bangladeshi nationals that’s growth 123.29%, he added.

In the program the Executive Chairman of BEZA Mr. Paban Chowdhury said, BEPZA is a successful organization. The speed of making economically prosperous Bangladesh under leadership of the Honourable Prime Minister would be accelerating if BEPZA and BEZA work jointly.

It may be mentioned despite of having demand it was not possible to allot industrial plot to the investors of home and abroad for the last few years due to scarcity of land in the EPZs located at Dhaka and Chittagong regions. In this circumstance, it would be possible to allocate land to the potential investors of BEPZA whether the BEPZA Economic Zone starts at Mirsarai nearby Chittagong. Moreover, expertise of BEPZA in setting up EPZ, experience and professionalism will expedite the development activities of BEPZA Economic Zone.

However, Bangladesh EPZ Authority is working relentlessly by increasing export through attract investment, export diversification, generation of employment. BEPZA is playing excellent role in women empowerment and socio-economic development as well as economic progress. In the eight EPZs, the cumulative investment stands at US$ 4.28 billion, exported goods worth of US$ 58.17 billion and employment generation at 4,69,929 in 462 operational industries where  64% are femal till April 2017.

Among others Mr. Zillur Rahman, ndc, Member (Investment Promotion), Mr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Member (Finance), Mr. Md. Nabirul Islam, Secretary of BEPZA, Director Generals & Directors of Prime Minister’s Office and General Managers of different departments of BEPZA and high officials of BEZA were present at the signing ceremony.
